THINGS CHINESE
Opening at Dragonfly Holistic Center December 3, an exhibit of photography by Ed Campbell architect/photographer of Chicago displays art workshops as well as some fine art. There are faces and figures, human and otherwise from that vast country as well as some ancient amazing historic artifacts,.random views of landscapes, markets, men boys and monks at play.As an architect I am registering the shape, style and ornamentation of buildings all the time. While the camera I use does not accommodate the sweep of grand facades, what I look for are elements of the design which can be isolated and enhanced to become independent art studies. I use the same approach for cabinetry, hardware and fabrics.
Another guide to picturing things is to look for patterns, repetitions and similarities, An instance of this in this show are cascades of multicolored silk for carpet weaving and newly pressed noodles drying out doors--two utterly different materials sharing the waterfall aspect
In nature photography I have found that an enlightened recognition of structure, function ,texture and coloration occurs the closer it is imaged--wonders continue to appear
