THINGS CHINESE

Opening at Dragonfly Holistic Center December 3, an exhibit of photography by Ed Campbell architect/photographer of Chicago displays art workshops as well as some fine art. There are faces and figures, human and otherwise from that vast country as well as some ancient amazing historic artifacts,.random views of landscapes, markets, men boys and monks at play.

As an architect I am registering the shape, style and ornamentation of buildings all the time. While the camera I use does not accommodate the sweep of grand facades, what I look for are elements of the design which can be isolated and enhanced to become independent art studies. I use the same approach for cabinetry, hardware and fabrics.
Another guide to picturing things is to look for patterns, repetitions and similarities, An instance of this in this show are cascades of multicolored silk for carpet weaving and newly pressed noodles drying out doors--two utterly different materials sharing the waterfall aspect
In nature photography I have found that an enlightened recognition of structure, function ,texture and coloration occurs the closer it is imaged--wonders continue to appear

Photography is about being present. When we make an image, like the aperture, we are open and engaging in the now. With nature photography immediacy takes precedent. Whether you’ve waited minutes, hours or days for the shot, this may never happen the same way again. Show up for it with your eyes open or it’s gone. But the photographer is more than a mirror with a reflecting instinct, our consciousness imposes order, sentiment, and narrative. A balance between the provocation of the mind and the chaotic occurrences of the natural ‘other’ is what I strive to capture in this work.

Artist James Campbell

"My art is a reflection of the incredible beauty that I see everywhere. I capture texture, light, shadow, color, reflection, and contrast in my photos . I compose the discrete elements in ways that are less reflective of their individuality and more indicative of the ways in which everything is interconnected. That connection may be one of contrast or similarity but each element requires the other for its’ strength.

I draw on my background as a carpenter and cabinetmaker as well as my Tai Chi practice in photography work. I try to minimize my rational mind and promote a strong connection between my eyes, my core and my hands as I compose each picture.

Currently I am pursuing ways in which I can capture elements of people’s lives through abstract images."
